THE EASY WAY TO MAKE AN OCEAN SENSORY BIN

Explore the ocean with an easy-to-make ocean sensory bin.  Get started with only 2 simple supplies and create hours of hands-on underwater fun for the little ones!

As part of my ongoing series, ABC Sensory, we’ve been exploring a different sensory activity for each letter of the alphabet.  And for today’s letter O sensory bin, we’ll be making an Ocean Sensory Bin!  In this post I’ll show you exactly how easy it is to make.  Plus, I created a FREE checklist to help you along the way.  Click the link to get access before getting started: FREE Idea Checklist: How To Create ABC Sensory Bins.

Supplies

• Plastic bin

• Sand

• Water

• Seashells

• Ocean toys (optional)

• Letter O Shapes (upper case and lower case)

Directions

Start by filling one side of your sensory bin with sand.

Make a barrier by lining several seashells along the edge of the sand.  (While this won’t stop the water from seeping into the sand, it should stop the sand from mixing into the water and turning it all mucky.  That is, until the kids decide that they want to mix everything together 🙂 )

Fill the other half of the sensory bin with water.  We added a few drops of blue food coloring to give it that blue-ocean hue.

Add some letter O’s into the water to help reinforce that O is for Ocean.

If you’d like, you can also include some ocean toys like boats, whales, fish, etc.  And that’s it!  Let the fun begin!

Make It A Game

Try pushing all the letter O’s under the sand and have the kids try to find them all!

Sneak In Some Learning

As your child is playing, try asking questions like:

“What letter are we learning about today?”

“What sound does the letter O make?”

“O is for what?…. Ocean!”
